The construction industry is following with from other major industries in Canada who have revamped their safety programs. Both the management and employees play a crucial role in preventing work-related injuries and diseases.

Importance of Implementing Safety Programs in the Industry

The focus on safety has become an essential part of the industry’s development. Safety should always be the top priority in the workplace.

Here at ENM Construction Management, we implement a strict safety program and here’s why we adhere to a strict standard:

  • A safety program helps create a productive work environment.
  • It helps ensure that work premises are kept to high standards.
  • It protects the most valuable assets of the company – the employees.
  • It reduces business costs and disruption.
  • It increases the competence and efficiency of each employee.
  • A safe work environment boosts the construction firm’s value to its current and potential clients and investors.

Construction companies with poor safety records find it much harder to bid for contracts. They fall under much higher scrutiny from the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) and have a harder time getting the work done on time and on budget.

Collaborating with WCB

In an effort to make the industry safer for workers, WCB has a laser focus on construction companies. WCB regularly posts stats about the impact of their programs to reduce work-related injuries.

ENM’s Safety Program: Components and Considerations

Dan Greenhalgh and Colin Lacey have always advocated for a robust safety program which integrates six major components in securing the success of our firm’s safety procedures.

A Commitment from the Management Team
This is a crucial aspect of the success of the program’s implementation. The management needs to be fully engaged in supporting safety efforts by providing both physical and financial resources.

Employee Engagement
Safety should always be a team effort. Employees at every level are expected to comply with all ENM Construction Management’s Health and Safety Program Requirements.

Vulnerability Assessment
Knowing a firm’s source of vulnerability is crucial in the implementation of the program. Potentially unsafe acts and conditions need to be considered.

Hazard Prevention and Control
Control measures need to be applied in order minimize exposure and adopting work practice controls will lessen hazards.

Health and Safety Meetings
Safety meetings aim to make all employees fully-aware of the safety policies implemented in the business. This is also the time when employee suggestions and recommendations are reviewed and evaluated to improve the existing policies and programs.

Safety Training
Aside from meetings, employees must also undergo safety training to prevent losses and ensure safety culture and management.

There are also other important considerations in implementing a safety program including the following:

  • Fall Protection Training;
  • Head Protection;
  • General Safety Provisions;
  • Eye/Face Protection;
  • Hazardous Materials; and
  • Visitor Responsibilities, among others.

A well-managed safety program helps reduce costs, improve workplace productivity, and solidify the company’s good reputation. The management of ENM Construction is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace for all its employees. Our health and safety program is designed to provide the best interests of everyone.
